Autism assessments can feel daunting, but good preparation can make the process smoother for you and your child.
1. Keep a Simple Log
Track daily patterns for at least a few weeks:
Sleep routines and disturbances
Meltdowns or distress episodes
Communication behaviours
Social interactions and sensory responses, Use a structured app like My Penelope to keep everything in one place.
2. Collect Relevant Documents
Bring anything that might help professionals understand your child:
Birth and medical history
Reports from nursery or school
Previous therapy reports
EHCP or SEN support plans if applicable
3. Prepare Your Questions
Write down things you want to ask, such as:
“What happens next if we get a diagnosis?”
“What support is available while waiting?”
“How can school help right now?”

4. Explain the Appointment to Your Child
Depending on their age and understanding:
Use social stories or visual aids to show what will happen
Reassure them it’s not a “test”
Bring comfort items (toys, snacks, headphones)
5. Take Care of Yourself Too
The process can bring up a lot emotionally.
Bring someone with you if allowed
Take notes during the meeting
Remember: you are advocating for your child, and that matters.
Final Thoughts
These assessments are the start of a journey — not the end. Whatever the outcome, your child is still the same wonderful person they were before.
